In today’s weakened economy,. American businesses are scratching their heads, seeking unique ways to retain quality employees without breaking the bank. With over two decades of marketing experience, I have several ideas which won’t sink the bottom line:

  1. Time off for good behavior (and performance).Reenergize the lives of your top performers by giving them the day off—with pay. While you’re at it, throw in a couple of tickets to a concert, movie, or sporting event. They’ll thank you later with even better job performance.
  2. Unique, yet inexpensive gifts of appreciation. Show your staff how much you appreciate their extra efforts with a special gift from the heart. Travel, gasoline, and grocery certificates, which can be purchased inexpensively, are a wonderful way to praise your team for a job well done.
  3. Free coffee. Sounds simple enough, but fewer companies are using this wonderful, eye-opening tool. Not only does coffee increase concentration, but studies have shown it also reduces workplace injuries. Just don’t spill it on your lap!
  4. Promotional products promote goodwill in the workplace. Motivate everyone on your staff to promotecompany spirit with a mug, pen, or paper weight with your company logo. These inexpensive “tools” encourage company loyalty, while costing little.
  5. Get together with your team. How well do you know your employees? Invite them to a company-sponsored event—cookout, picnic, ball game, etc.—and watch spirits soar. They’ll get to know you more than just the person who signs their paycheck.
  6. The best things in life are free, and mean so much. Many employers have discovered a program which increases morale while saving them money. Free health cards, saving employees money on prescriptions, lab work, and imaging services, are a welcome bridge in reducing absenteeism, increasing productivity, and decreasing stress.
  7. Sometimes, it’s the simple things. When is the last time you patted an employee on the back, wrote about a team member’s outstanding performance in the company newsletter, or simply said thank you for a job well done? What a wonderful, free way to increase morale and, perhaps, the bottom line.

Perhaps you can come up with a few more tools to increase productivity, boost morale, and retain good all employees. After all, your business thrives on this precious commodity. Without them, where would any business be?
